Artillery inventor Admiral John Dahlgren developed a wide range of artillery pieces for use by the navy.
Among these were two small pieces designed for use on launches, the 12 Pdr Dahlgren Boat Howitzer and the 12 Pdr Dahlgren Boat Rifle.
These weapons, somewhat comparable in size to mountain howitzers, were extensively used by the Navy during the Civil War, and occasionally by land forces as well.
